A fun, energetic speaker for Jesus Christ!

What is your Vine?

Today I listened to part of a sermon by Michael Youssef on Jonah. He had a different twist to it and it really made me think. For those of you unfamiliar with the end of Jonah, it is about how Jonah was being a big baby! He is pretty upset that God did not destroy the city of Ninevah because they had been so wicked before Jonah preached to them. He was angry and he went and sat outside of the city and asked God to kill him. Instead, God made a plant (Dr. Youssef said “vine” and that made a better title!) to provide him shade. Jonah loved the shade! Then God decided to destroy the plant and made it even more miserable for Jonah. He was really mad then! God made his point to Jonah by telling him that he had more compassion for that plant than for the 120,000 people who were saved.

It made me think about what my plant or vine is in my life. What do I get really upset about when there is so much to be thankful for? Then I had to come to the realization that I have small vines a lot. An example happened just today. I started thinking about something someone said to me a few days ago. That’s right–he didn’t even say it today! At the time I couldn’t think of a good argument against it because I was frustrated (not as much as I was today) but of course, today it is crystal clear. This made me mad.

Thankfully, God set me straight in my devotion time in a great way. I felt that He was getting me to focus on the things I’m thankful for and that helped me to get some perspective. Before that, I got into a bad mood and I almost never get in a bad mood. I was thinking that it was a good thing my family wasn’t there because I may not have been nice.

I have several hot buttons and when they are hit I have trouble focusing on the good around me, even if no one can tell. Next time I am going to take some time and praise Jesus Christ for all the good that is going on in my life and others. I don’t want to be a big baby like Jonah and focus on the vine instead of the salvation of many!
